SUMMARY:After Violence Workshops
DESCRIPTION:_REMIX will run two workshops for members of the LGBTQI+ community to inform the creation of their new Baroque drag performance\, After Violence. \nHeld on Saturday 3rd November at the Sackler Centre\, Dulwich Picture Gallery\, the workshops will share work-in-progress\, exploring creative practice around queer interpretation in music\, theatre and performance art. Workshops will be led by Benjamin Tassie and Finn Beames\, with vocalist Ella Taylor and drag queen Rhys Hollis. The workshops and will be a safe-space to share experiences and help shape the creation of After Violence. Participants will not need to prepare anything ahead of the workshops. \nWORKSHOP ONE: GENDER AND SONG\n1130AM-1PM\nLed by composer Benjamin Tassie\, participants will work with non-binary vocalist Ella Taylor to explore the process of ‘queering’ in vocal performance. Ella will share their work interpreting songs by Baroque composer John Dowland for REMIX’s After Violence. Participants will be invited to share their own experiences around gender and masculinity\, and to respond to the work-in-progress. Participation in the workshop will include time to respond to Ribera’s monumental canvas\, Apollo Flaying Marsyas – on display at Dulwich Picture Gallery as part of ‘Ribera: The Art of Violence’ – in front of which After Violence will be performed on November 23rd. \nPlace is limited\, so if you would like to take part\, please email info@classicalremix.org. \nWORKSHOP TWO: MASCULINITY AND MOVEMENT\n2PM-330PM\nLed by writer and director Finn Beames\, participants will work with drag queen and performance artist Rhys Hollis (Rhys’s Pieces) to explore gender and masculinity in movement and drag. Performed by drag queen Rhys’s Pieces\, non-binary vocalist Ella Taylor\, and electronic musician Benjamin Tassie\, After Violence will explore gender\, masculinity and male violence from a uniquely queer perspective\, celebrating diverse identities though radical\, cross-genre performance. Text and direction will be by Finn Beames of Oedipa. \nUsing the music of baroque composer John Dowland as a framework\, After Violence will incorporate elements of dance\, cabaret\, drag\, electronic-pop and baroque music to explore plural perspectives on maleness and masculinity. Performed in the beautiful Tudor setting of the National Trust’s Sutton House\, After Violence will be a unique musical experience\, celebrating diverse identities though radical\, cross-genre performance. \nThe performance will last approximately 60 minutes\, with a bar until late.
